Do you like it? The new Facebook plugin

23Apr10

You can promote and be promoted at same time inside of your friends network. At first instance i thought the plugin would display all profiles that choose the “Like” option – but with some experiences and some reviews i realize that it only been showed the Facebook profiles that you´ve/are friend already (you are not on designi1 Facebook friends? Join it now!).

Made my root as everyday for some design friends and found a great way for the social “facebookers” interact with the bloggers. I found that specifically at the chethstudios web site that made recently a new redesign and truly recommend to step by for a visit. There is a new plugin “Like it” developed by facebook wish interacts directly with your Facebook account. Well, you should ask yourself why this plugin is better then the others already implemented  (share, fan…)? – the answer is simple.

Why better then Facebook Share button?

The like button its quit similar to the share button, for what I see the only difference is because the like button can show the friends inside of your own network that liked that particular post in a great icon as it shows in the image below. The share button only showed the number of shares made inside of Facebook. In my point of view this can bring more interaction between the blogger and his Facebook network.

Like it - Facebook

Tracking users?

The giant Facebook that as already billions of users and its on of most used social web application was already confronted with some issues as the user privacy. This new concern already got a reply: “Facebook denies the claim that they do not track users unless the users fill out information in their profile”. Do you believe in this big monster that tracks all our movements?

How to set up the Facebook like button?

Its pretty simple. Now that we know what is “like button” and bit some more concerns about the giant Facebook we can explain how to set up the button in a simple few steps in your blog.

1) If you´ve WordPress:

Just grab the following code and enter it whenever you want in your web page.

<iframe src=”http://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?href=&lt;?php echo get_permalink( $id ); ?>&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=450&amp;action=like&amp;colorscheme=light” scrolling=”no” frameborder=”0″ allowTransparency=”true” style=”border:none; overflow:hidden; width:450px; height:px”></iframe>

I set up dynamically the permalink, that way this code will get automatically your page URL and your post id.

2) If you´ve another blog or website:

<iframe src=”http://www.facebook.com/plugins/like.php?href=YOURSITEURL+POST_ID&amp;layout=standard&amp;show_faces=true&amp;width=450&amp;action=like&amp;colorscheme=light&#8221; scrolling=”no” frameborder=”0″ allowTransparency=”true” style=”border:none; overflow:hidden; width:450px; height:px”></iframe>

3) You´ve the Facebook developers support as well:

Facebook developers have a good interface as it showed in the image below that helps you to customized the styles, dimension, colors, fonts… They´ve the standarview that enables to watch what we´ve been explaining here about the plugin. But, if you wanna a similar format to the share button you can select over the “layout styles” the button_count that way it will count only the likes you´ve from that post.

a) – You can manage in this customizing tool

b) – Get the code

… and change that green part of the Iframe for this Dynamic code:

<?php echo get_permalink( $id ); ?>

Conclusion

I think you can have a clue what is the “Like it” plugin with this simple review. But I´m not owner of the all knowllege and you can be an important element to make this code / review post much better. This was what i learn from yesterday. I think you can have another experiences and other technical solution  to implement this plugin… Its your turn to talk and I would love to ear your thoughts.

Special thanks to…

For helping me out testing the new plugin at “Biodiversity post“.

  2. Thanks Lucas for you fast comment 😀 That´s true, I believe this plugin will had lots of importance principally for the bloggers – It will be one of the most important traffic boosters. But lets wait and see 😀

  3. Awesome plugin, very good review, love how it shows the profile icons 🙂

  4. Thanks Loswl 😀 I´m waiting as well to see the behavior of the plugin. So far the privacy concerns are protected size if you “Like it” it only will show you your network facebook friends that like it as well this article. So, everyone can like it, love it, so on with no privacy issues.
